Hilltop Packs Raven D V4 Review (2026): Is This Ultralight Pack Worth $400+?

Our Hilltop Packs Raven D V4 review examines its weight, Dyneema construction, capacity, features, price and trade-offs to see who this ultralight pack suits.

By Moon PickePublished Oct 4, 2026Our review process

This Hilltop Packs Raven D V4 review answers a simple U.S. buying question: is Hilltop Packs’ black Dyneema Raven worth more than $400 when Moon Picke has not worn it on trail? The assessment uses the current official product page, listed weights and volumes, V4 options, pricing, warranty language, and lead-time policy—not a fabricated field test.

Moon Picke compared Hilltop Packs’ current product documentation, manufacturer-listed weights, materials, carrying design, storage configuration, customization options and pricing. We did not backpack with the Raven D V4. See how we evaluate and our editorial standards.

Moon Picke’s quick take

The Raven D V4 is Hilltop Packs’ black Dyneema, frameless flagship: listed from about 19 oz, built to torso size, with 44–59 L volume options and a $434.50 list price checked October 4, 2026. Best for hikers who already keep kit weight down and will pay for the lightest documented Raven laminate plus V4 extras (swapable roll-top straps, optional side zips, drain holes, YKK hardware). The main trade-off is cost versus Raven ECO V4 and Raven X UL, plus a frameless design whose published comfort window is 25–30 lbs of total trail weight. Skip it if you want a frame, a printed pack that is in stock, or a cheaper VX21 Raven. This is a spec-based review, not a comfort diary.

What is the Raven D V4?

Hilltop Packs lists the Raven D V4 as its flagship ultralight frameless backpack, custom-built to torso size. The company says choose black Dyneema (non-customized) if you want the lightest fully featured pack in its class. It sits on the Pro Line, which Hilltop describes as premium materials (Dyneema, Ultra, Venom) for hikers looking for “the best of the best.”

The pack is not a walk-up stock bag with one SKU size. The Shopify listing is a single $434.50 default variant; torso, volume, belt, and V4 extras are selected as you order. Variant SKU is not published on the current product.js file.

On paper, you get a roll-top, mesh-front Raven in black Dyneema, load lifters, 3″ shoulder straps with grosgrain daisy chain, and a hip-belt menu. Mesh, stretch pockets, webbing, and hardware are separate from the Dyneema body fabric. Do not call every panel “Dyneema.”

What makes the Raven D V4 different?

Inside Hilltop’s Raven family, D is the Dyneema, black, lowest-listed-weight model. ECO is printed EPLX200. X UL is heavier VX21. D also carries the V4 feature list (swapable single/Y top straps, optional side zipper pockets, drain holes, all YKK hardware, removable/replaceable hip belt). X UL’s current page does not duplicate that V4 block. Those are documentation differences, not a Moon Picke wear test.

For a buyer, the practical split is ounces and dollars: listed starting weight around 19 oz (about 539 g, editorial conversion) and a $434.50 list, versus cheaper, heavier, or printed siblings. Cottage production in Waynesburg, PA, and a backpack lead time currently listed up to six months also shape whether “worth $400+” includes waiting.

Material: what “D” means

Hilltop states: the “D” stands for Dyneema. This version is made with 2.92 Dyneema, called an ultralight, high-end pack fabric. The feature list adds 2.92 oz and 5.0 abrasion-resistant Dyneema. Color: black Dyneema only on the standard page.

On paper: lowest listed Raven starting weight (19 oz)—the main documented reason to pay more than ECO or X UL. The D page does not use ECO’s “waterproof backing” sentence; it relies on taped horizontal seams “for increased weather resistance” plus a roll-top, not a dry-bag spec. Hilltop lists 5.0 abrasion-resistant Dyneema beside 2.92 oz Dyneema but does not map panels or publish a comparative abrasion table versus EPLX200 or VX21—do not read that as indestructible. Official photos show a crinkled black body with separate stretch sides and mesh front. Brand-wide, wear can often be patched with ultralight fabric repair tape; that kit is not listed in the D box. Dyneema is one reason the Pro Line listing is $434.50, alongside made-to-order sewing and V4 hardware.

Front pocket: open-cell mesh, not Dyneema. Side pockets: adjustable stretch, up to two 1 L bottles each. Straps and attachment points: 3″ with military-grade grosgrain. Treat those as other materials.

Weight

Hilltop publishes more than one figure. Report them as configuration-dependent, not as a single universal ounce:

  • Starts at just 19 oz depending on options (about 539 g, Moon Picke editorial conversion).
  • Weight 20–24 oz depending on options (about 567–680 g).
  • With a padded hip belt, “around 18–22 ounces.”

Those ranges overlap. There is no ounce chart by torso. Side zips, bottom pocket, ice-axe loop, and belt choice will move the scale. Honest reading: a sub-1.5 lb class pack that can sit near 19 oz in a light build or in the low-20 oz range once options stack.

Capacity

Hilltop calculates each named option as main body + two 1 L side pockets + a 7 L open-cell mesh front pocket:

  • 44 L = 35 L body + 2 L sides + 7 L front
  • 48 L = 40 + 2 + 7
  • 54 L = 45 + 2 + 7
  • 59 L = 50 + 2 + 7

Torso size, Hilltop says, does not change volume. Optional bottom and side-zip pockets are not in those totals. On paper, 44 L is 35 L of roll-top plus 9 L of named external pockets—not 44 L of closed main-bag space. Likely use, without field notes: kits that fit a 35–50 L body if total trail weight stays inside Hilltop’s ratings.

Carry system (frameless)

The listing says frameless. There is no stay, hoop, or framesheet in the published spec. That usually means lower structural weight, more dependence on a tightly packed bag for shape, and less load transfer than a framed pack. It is a trade-off, not an upgrade by default.

Hilltop Packs load guidance (paraphrase of the D page, not a Moon Picke test): comfort rating total trail weight 25–30 lbs; max total trail rating 35–40 lbs. If your typical load sits above that max, this is the wrong architecture even if you like Dyneema. Generic ultralight advice—keep base weight down so a frameless pack makes sense—is not an extra Hilltop number beyond those ratings.

Back of pack: elastic cords to hold a sit pad are included and removable. The page does not list a foam back panel as part of the backpack. Official photos show a padded-looking harness and a sternum strap; the written feature list does not specify sternum width or back-panel foam.

Shoulder straps

Documented: 3″ wide straps with military-grade grosgrain daisy chain; load lifters included. Hilltop’s copy says “comfortable”; this review does not repeat that as a Moon Picke finding. Daisy chain can hold separately sold shoulder pouches. Foam type and thickness are not listed.

Hip belt

The Raven D V4 is not a single “belt included / not included” SKU. You choose:

  • 3″ removable fully padded hip belt (sizes 25–30″, 30–35″, 35–40″, 40–45″, 45–55″)
  • 1″ removable web strap
  • No belt, with loops left for a later 1″ web

The feature list also calls the padded belt removable and replaceable. Hip-belt pockets are accessories marked “coming soon,” not included. Product.js does not itemize belt adders; the page price is $434.50. Padded-belt weight is the 18–22 oz note. No extra pound-of-comfort claim beyond Hilltop’s load window.

Pockets and storage

Designed, on paper, for walk-accessible water and wet gear:

  • 7 L open mesh front with removable elastic cord over it
  • Stretch side pockets, drain holes listed as a V4 change, up to two 1 L bottles each
  • Optional zippered side pockets (left, right, or both as worn) for keys/wallet-type items
  • Optional stretchy bottom pocket under the pack
  • Grosgrain attachment points; removable side cords
  • Optional ice-axe loop
  • Shoulder pouches and a roll-top fanny pack sold separately; fanny listed as integrating with the Raven UL

The official side photo of the current D listing shows a zippered side panel on that sample. Treat zips as optional unless you select them. The listed intent of the front pocket is quick-drying wet items.

Roll-top / closure

Closure is a roll-top with swapable single or Y top straps on all V4 packs; Y is typically for bear canisters. You can switch later. On paper, a roll-top gives volume flexibility (over-roll to compress, unroll toward the 37″ unrolled height), simple construction, and better weather shedding when rolled and buckled than when left open. It does not make the pack completely waterproof. Listed dimensions: 37″ tall unrolled, 12″ wide, depth depends on liter size.

Is the Raven D V4 waterproof?

No fully waterproof finished-bag claim. Horizontal seams are taped for increased weather resistance; vertical seams are double sewn and binding-tape reinforced. Closure is a roll-top. Mesh front, stretch sides, optional zips, and drain holes are openings. Pack liners are a separate Hilltop product, not listed as included.

Customization

Standard D: exact torso (if between sizes, Hilltop says use the smaller number), volume option, hip-belt type/size, single vs Y strap, optional side zips, optional ice axe, optional bottom pocket. Color: black Dyneema only.

A separate product, Raven D V4 CUSTOM, lists at $485 and was unavailable October 4, 2026. It is 2.92 Dyneema with print on sides and front; pockets, back panel, straps, and belts stay black. Printing is not documented as changing capacity or frame. This review uses only a Custom-filename official photo there; ECO-named files on that gallery were not used.

Why is the Raven D V4 so expensive?

Above $400 you pay for documented Dyneema (2.92 and 5.0 AR), a 19 oz-class listed start, taped/binding-tape construction, V4 hardware, and made-to-order sewing in Waynesburg, PA. The lead-times page currently puts backpacks at up to six months and mentions Dyneema shortages—wait time, not a romance metric. Whether $434.50 is justified depends on needing that listed ounce versus ECO at $412.50 or X UL at $395.50. No price-per-ounce gimmick.

Pros

  • Lowest listed Raven starting weight (from 19 oz).
  • Documented 2.92 and 5.0 abrasion-resistant Dyneema body fabric; Pro Line positioning.
  • Frameless, made-to-torso design with four clear body-plus-pocket volume recipes.
  • V4 extras: swapable roll-top straps, optional side zips, drain holes, YKK hardware, replaceable belt.
  • External layout aimed at bottles and a drying mesh pocket, with optional bottom pocket and ice-axe loop.
  • Horizontal seam tape called out for increased weather resistance (not a waterproof-pack claim).

Cons

  • $434.50 is the highest current Raven list price; ECO and X UL undercut it without matching Dyneema’s starting ounce.
  • Frameless, with a 25–30 lb comfort / 35–40 lb max window—poor fit for heavy traditional kits.
  • Weight and price move with options; there is no single guaranteed 19 oz configuration on a scale we have used.
  • Standard color is black only; printed Dyneema is a separate, currently unavailable $485 listing.
  • Backpacks currently listed at up to six months lead time; unused returns are 60 days with buyer-paid shipping (custom unused like-new is included in refund-policy language, but a long queue still ties up money).

The Raven D V4 makes the most sense if…

  • Light kit and Hilltop’s 25–30 lb comfort rating.
  • Pack weight—not print or the lowest dollar—is why you are shopping Ravens.
  • You will pack a frameless bag as structure and size torso carefully.
  • You will pay over ECO for documented Dyneema ounces and use V4 options.

Skip the Raven D V4 if…

  • Loads above the 35–40 lb max, or you want a framed pack.
  • Price-sensitive: ECO’s V4 set or X UL’s VX21 is enough.
  • You want in-stock print (that Raven is ECO) or cannot wait up to six months.
  • You are new to backpacking with a heavy traditional kit.

Raven D V4 vs Raven ECO vs Raven X UL

Short overview only. Current list prices and listed weights, checked October 4, 2026:

Model Main material Listed weight Price Best for
Raven D V4 2.92 / 5.0 AR Dyneema From ~19 oz $434.50 Lightest listed Raven
Raven ECO V4 EPLX200 From ~20 oz $412.50 Printed V4 Raven
Raven X UL VX21 ~28 oz $395.50 Lowest Raven list price

Same published 44–59 L recipe on all three. D and ECO share V4 option language and 25–30 / 35–40 lb ratings. X UL lists 25–28 lb comfort and 30–35 lb max. This page stays on D; it is not a full three-way comparison.

Alternatives inside Hilltop Packs

  • If print and $22 matter more than Dyneema’s listed ounce: Raven ECO V4 ($412.50), same V4 architecture, EPLX200.
  • If lowest Raven price and VX21 matter more: Raven X UL ($395.50), heavier listed pack, simpler documented option set.
  • If you want a smaller EPLX200 overnight family: Dirty 30 ECO ($385), not a 44–59 L Raven.
  • If you want a smaller trail/day volume: 24Seven Trail Backpack (from $352 on the current listing).

Those are different products. Do not treat them as silent D variants.

Warranty, returns, lead time

Fabric-based products: 5-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship; wear and tear excluded; Hilltop covers warranty shipping on manufacturing defects. Returns: unused items within 60 days; buyer pays return shipping. Refund policy also states unused custom products in like-new condition can be returned within 60 days. Gift cards are non-returnable.

Lead times page (October 4, 2026): non-printed gear typically 10 business days; custom/printed typically 10–15; backpacks currently up to 6 months, with Dyneema shortages mentioned. Estimates change. Confirm before you treat D as a near-term ship.

FAQ

How much does the Raven D V4 weigh?

Listed from 19 oz, also 20–24 oz by options, about 18–22 oz with a padded belt. No ounce per torso size.

What capacity is the Raven D V4?

44 / 48 / 54 / 59 L = 35/40/45/50 L body + 2×1 L sides + 7 L mesh front.

Is the Raven D V4 waterproof?

No fully waterproof finished-bag claim. Horizontal seams are taped for increased weather resistance. Mesh pockets and a roll-top remain.

Is the Raven D V4 frameless?

Yes. The current listing says frameless.

How much weight can the Raven D V4 carry?

Hilltop: comfort 25–30 lbs total trail weight; max 35–40 lbs. Those are manufacturer ratings, not a Moon Picke load test.

Does the Raven D V4 include a hip belt?

You choose a 3″ padded belt, a 1″ web, or none. It is a build option, not a hidden surprise belt on every configuration.

What is the Raven D V4 made from?

Pack fabric: 2.92 oz and 5.0 abrasion-resistant Dyneema. Mesh front, stretch sides, grosgrain, and hardware are specified separately.

Raven D vs Raven ECO: what is the difference?

D is black Dyneema, listed from ~19 oz, $434.50. ECO is printed EPLX200, listed from ~20 oz, $412.50. Same published liter recipe and V4 feature list on the current pages.

Is the Raven D V4 worth the price?

Only if Dyneema’s listed weight and Pro Line fabric are why you are spending $434.50. If not, ECO or X UL is the more logical Hilltop spend. This Hilltop Packs Raven D V4 review cannot certify trail comfort without a field test.

Final verdict

Is the Raven D V4 worth it?

Yes, if you want the lightest current Raven on the spec sheet, accept a frameless 25–30 lb comfort window, want V4 options, and $434.50 plus a possible multi-month backpack queue is acceptable.

No / probably not, if you mainly want a Raven-shaped pack at a lower price, want print, or carry loads that need a frame. The most appropriate Hilltop alternative for that second buyer is usually Raven ECO V4 (same V4 architecture, $412.50) or Raven X UL if VX21 and $395.50 matter more than ounces.

On paper, Raven D V4 is a specialized Dyneema tool, not a default “best backpack.” Buy it for the documented material and weight. Skip it when those are not your constraint.
