Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven (2026): Which Hilltop Pack Is Better?

Compare Hilltop Packs Dirty 30 ECO and Raven backpacks by capacity, weight, materials, features and price to see which ultralight pack fits your kit.

By Moon PickePublished Oct 4, 2026Our review process

This Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven comparison answers whether you should buy Hilltop Packs’ Dirty 30 ECO or a current Raven. Moon Picke used live Hilltop product pages—listed capacities, weights, fabrics, hardware, options, and prices. We did not hike with either pack. See how we evaluate and our editorial standards.

Dirty 30 ECO is not a cheap Raven. Raven is not automatically more comfortable. Both families are frameless packs from Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. They coexist because they document different volume platforms, option menus, and—outside the EPLX200 pairing—different body fabrics.

Moon Picke’s Quick Take

Dirty 30 ECO makes more sense if your kit already fits Hilltop’s smaller documented body (30 liters internal in one paragraph; 33 liters main body in DETAILS), you want the listed 15–18 oz start, and you do not need Raven’s 35–50 L main-body ladder, V4 extras, or published load ratings. A Raven makes more sense if you need that 44 / 48 / 54 / 59 L recipe, a hip-belt menu that includes a 3″ padded belt, and a choice among Dyneema, printed EPLX200, or VX21. Closest fabric match: Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven ECO V4. Spec comparison, not a trail-comfort diary.

The biggest difference is the platform

Dirty 30 ECO is a smaller frameless SKU: no hip belt in the base build, EPLX200, roll-top, mesh front, stretch sides, load lifters, $385. Raven is the flagship volume family: four listed totals, torso-specific build, a hip-belt menu, and three in-stock material SKUs (D, ECO, X UL).

Dirty 30 is not “Raven minus quality.” Paying for Raven liters you will not fill is a poor trade. Treating Dirty 30 as automatically more ultralight still requires checking Raven D’s ~19 oz start against Dirty’s 15–18 oz range.

Dirty 30 vs Raven: how much space do you actually get?

Do not read “Dirty 30” as a verified single 30-liter figure. The current Dirty 30 ECO page publishes two volume stories.

Opening copy: no hip belt, 30 liters internal, 1 liter each side, 6 liters front, 38 liters total. DETAILS: Main Body 33 Liters, sides 1 liter each, front 6 liters open mesh / 4 liters closed cell mesh. The same page also calls it “this 33-liter pack.” Moon Picke reports both. Use them only against matching Raven rows.

Raven D V4, Raven ECO V4, and Raven X UL share one recipe: 44 L = 35 L body + 2×1 L sides + 7 L front; 48 / 54 / 59 L use 40 / 45 / 50 L bodies with the same pockets. Torso size does not change Raven volume. Dirty 30 ECO is one SKU with torso ranges S 15–17 / M 17–19 / L 19–21 inches.

Editorial arithmetic on Hilltop’s numbers:

  • Main body: Dirty 30 L (intro) or 33 L (DETAILS) versus Raven 35–50 L. The smallest Raven body is still larger.
  • Sides: 1 liter each on both (Raven also says stretch sides can hold up to two 1 L bottles per side—a fit claim, not extra listed liters).
  • Front: Dirty 6 L open / 4 L closed-cell versus Raven 7 L open-cell mesh.
  • Totals: Dirty 38 L intro; DETAILS open-mesh stack 33+1+1+6 = 41 L (editorial). Raven 44–59 L.

Smaller capacity can suit a compact kit, a short trip, or a summer load—buyer scenarios, not extra Hilltop promises beyond calling Dirty a three-season ultralight pack. A pack that is too small for the gear you carry is a poor purchase at any weight.

Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven weight

Dirty 30 ECO: 15–18 ounces depending on options; no torso-by-torso gram table. Raven D V4: from about 19 oz. Raven ECO V4: from about 20 oz, 20–24 oz by options, about 22–24 oz with a padded belt. Raven X UL: about 28 oz.

Moon Picke editorial calculations using manufacturer-listed starting figures:

  • Dirty 15 oz vs ECO 20 oz: Dirty listed 5 oz lighter.
  • Dirty 15 oz vs D 19 oz: Dirty listed 4 oz lighter.
  • Dirty 15 oz vs X UL 28 oz: Dirty listed 13 oz lighter.
  • Dirty 18 oz vs ECO 20 oz: Dirty listed 2 oz lighter—easy to erase with belts.

Dirty’s listed range sits under every current Raven start. The 2–5 oz gap versus D/ECO is modest in a full kit; the ~10–13 oz gap versus X UL is larger. Two ounces is not a “massive” reduction.

Dirty’s base listing includes no hip belt; the 1″ webbing belt is $10, fully removable. Raven’s starts already describe 3″ padded, 1″ web, or none. Hilltop does not publish the Dirty belt’s isolated ounces.

Material

Dirty 30 ECO’s title names EPLX200 Ecopak. Do not infer fabric from “ECO” alone. The Dirty page also says “eco friendly Ecopak fabric”—Hilltop marketing. Moon Picke does not treat that as an environmental verdict. Dirty does not reprint a recycled-polyester / C0 paragraph.

Raven ECO V4 does: “Eco” stands for Ecopak EPLX200 from Challenge Sailcloth—100% recycled polyester components, C0 DWR (no fluorocarbons), waterproof backing, plus RUV film comparison language. Those sentences are Hilltop’s Raven ECO documentation of EPLX200, not a lab ranking and not copy-pasted onto Dirty 30.

Raven D V4: 2.92 osy Dyneema with 5.0 AR in high-wear areas. Raven X UL: X-Pac VX21. Mesh, stretch, grosgrain, and hardware are not the body laminate.

Frame, carry system, shoulder straps, and hip belt

Dirty 30 ECO and current Ravens are all listed frameless. Frame architecture is not a differentiator.

Shared on the sheets: roll-top silhouette, load lifters, sternum strap (Dirty specifies a whistle), stretch sides, mesh-style front storage, grosgrain, sit-pad cords. Dirty states no back padding. Raven ECO likewise points to sit-pad cords, not a framesheet.

Real differences:

  • Hip belt: Dirty ships without one; optional 1″ web $10. Official Dirty rear photos show that web belt. Raven: 3″ removable padded belt (S–XXL waist), 1″ web, or none. Raven pages publish load ratings; Dirty publishes none.
  • Shoulder straps: Raven D/ECO list 3″ straps. Dirty lists “super comfortable shoulder straps”—manufacturer copy, not a wear test. Dirty strap width is NOT LISTED.
  • Torso: Dirty S/M/L ranges. Raven asks for exact torso; if between sizes, Hilltop says choose the smaller number.
  • V4: Raven D and ECO document swapable single/Y top straps, optional side zip pockets, side-pocket drain holes, all-YKK hardware, replaceable hip belt. Dirty is not labeled V4. Raven X UL uses Raven volume without that V4 block.

Raven D/ECO: comfort 25–30 lbs total trail weight, max 35–40 lbs. Raven X UL: comfort 25–28, max 30–35. Dirty 30 ECO: no listed load rating. Moon Picke will not invent one.

Pockets, storage, and closure

Dirty 30 ECO includes a large front pocket (open-air mesh for drying, per Hilltop), adjustable side pockets, elastic cord, bottom stretchy pocket, ice-axe loop, and trekking-pole loops. Hip-belt pockets are not in the base build.

Raven ECO / D: open mesh front, stretch sides, optional bottom pocket, optional ice-axe loop, optional V4 side zips, hip-belt pockets “coming soon.” Raven X UL includes an ice-axe loop and documents mesh or closed-stretch front. Raven pages describe fanny-pack integration; Dirty 30 ECO does not.

Sibling architecture, not identical. Dirty includes ice axe and bottom pocket; Raven D/ECO treat those as optional. Front liters: Dirty 6 / 4 versus Raven 7. Both use a roll-top. Raven V4 adds swapable single/Y top straps; Dirty photos show a top strap without that swap language.

Water resistance

Hilltop shop copy says “highly water-resistant,” not a dry-bag guarantee. Dirty: EPLX200 body; no seam-tape sentence on that page; mesh and roll-top wet out. Raven ECO: waterproof backing on the EPLX200 paragraph; horizontal seams taped; vertical seams double sewn with binding tape. D and X UL use the same seam-tape language. Waterproof film ≠ fully waterproof finished backpack. Use a liner if contents must stay dry.

Price: what the extra money buys

October 4, 2026: Dirty 30 ECO $385. Raven ECO V4 $412.50. Raven D V4 $434.50. Raven X UL $395.50. No compare-at sale on these SKUs.

  • Raven ECO, +$27.50: 35–50 L main body, V4 options, padded-belt menu, published load ratings, custom printing included on that listing. Not a different frame.
  • Raven D, +$49.50: same Raven platform, Dyneema, lightest Raven start (~19 oz).
  • Raven X UL, +$10.50: same Raven liters, VX21, ~28 oz. Not lighter than Dirty 30 ECO.

Dirty custom printing is $39. Raven ECO’s page says that version includes custom printing. A printed Dirty is $424 editorial—above ECO’s $412.50 if you actually want print. A non-printed Dirty stays cheaper.

Hilltop Packs Dirty 30 ECO: who is it for?

Exact name: Dirty 30 ECO Ultralight Frameless Backpack (Ecopak EPLX200). Available. $385. White, gray, black, or custom print. Pro+ line. Waynesburg, PA.

Frameless; 15–18 oz; EPLX200; torso S/M/L; no hip belt standard; optional 1″ web $10; load lifters; mesh front; stretch sides; bottom pocket; ice-axe loop; roll-top; no listed load rating; mixed 30 L / 33 L body copy.

Main advantage: smaller documented body plus the lightest start here. Main limitation: less listed volume than any current Raven, no load numbers, no V4 zip/strap-swap block. Best buyer: measured compact kit, wants EPLX200 without paying for 44–59 L unused.

Hilltop Packs Raven: who is it for?

Raven is the flagship frameless family: four volumes, torso-specific build, roll-top, hip-belt menu. Material is how you choose among in-stock SKUs. For D vs ECO vs X UL in depth, see Raven D vs Raven ECO vs Raven X UL.

  • Raven D V4 ($434.50, from ~19 oz): Dyneema, V4, 25–30 / 35–40 lb ratings. Raven D V4 review.
  • Raven ECO V4 ($412.50, from ~20 oz): printed EPLX200, same volume/V4 path as D. Closest cousin to Dirty 30 ECO. Raven ECO V4 review.
  • Raven X UL ($395.50, ~28 oz): VX21, same liters, no V4 block, lower published max than D/ECO.

Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven ECO

Cleanest material pairing: both name EPLX200. Still a platform comparison.

Item Dirty 30 ECO Raven ECO V4
Price $385 (+$10 belt, +$39 print if chosen) $412.50 (print included on that listing)
Listed weight 15–18 oz From ~20 oz
Main body 30 L or 33 L on the same page 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 L
Listed total 38 L intro; DETAILS stack differs 44 / 48 / 54 / 59 L
Hip belt None included; 1″ web $10 Padded, 1″ web, or none
Load rating NOT LISTED Comfort 25–30 lbs; max 35–40 lbs
V4 extras Not listed Side zips, swapable straps, drain holes, replaceable belt

Dirty if the smaller body and $385 (or $395 with web belt) match the kit. Raven ECO if you need Raven liters, print-in-price, V4 pockets, or a padded belt with published load numbers. The extra $27.50 does not buy a frame.

Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven D

Smaller Dirty body versus Raven 35–50 L. EPLX200 versus Dyneema. Dirty 15–18 oz versus D from ~19 oz—Dirty can still be lighter. $385 versus $434.50 (+$49.50). Choose Dirty for compact EPLX200; D if you need Raven volume and Dyneema. Do not buy D as a “more comfortable Dirty” without a frame or a Dirty load rating to compare.

Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven X UL

Same liter gap as other Ravens. EPLX200 versus VX21. Dirty 15–18 oz versus ~28 oz. $385 versus $395.50 (+$10.50). Dirty if you want the smaller/lighter listed spec; X UL if you need Raven capacity in VX21 at the Raven floor price. Both list an ice-axe loop—that is not a platform reason.

Before buying: measure your gear volume

Add packed volume of sleep system, shelter, clothing, food, water, cook kit, and other essentials. Roll-tops flex; stuffing a 50 L pile into a ~30–33 L body still fails. If the pile looks like a Raven 40 L body, Dirty’s price will not fix overflow. If it is a quilt, tiny tarp, and a few days of food, Raven’s extra body liters may be unused fabric.

Dirty 30 ECO pros and cons

Pros: lowest list price here ($385); lightest listed start (15–18 oz); EPLX200 named in the title; ice axe, bottom pocket, load lifters, pole loops included; optional 1″ belt at $10.

Cons: two body-volume lines on one page; no Raven 44–59 L ladder; no published load rating; no included hip belt and no 3″ padded option on the Dirty SKU; no documented V4 zips; still a $385 cottage pack with backpack lead times up to six months.

Raven family pros and cons

Pros: 35–50 L main bodies; material choice (Dyneema, printed EPLX200, VX21); hip-belt menu including sized 3″ padded belts; published trail-weight windows (tighter on X UL); D/ECO V4 extras; ECO includes print on its listing.

Cons: higher prices than Dirty except the $10.50 X UL gap—and X UL is heavier; still frameless; recycled/C0 language is ECO-page EPLX200 copy, not D or X UL; ice axe / bottom pocket optional on D/ECO; same long backpack lead time.

Who should buy Dirty 30 ECO?

Buy it if your measured kit fits the smaller documented body; you want the included bottom pocket and ice axe without a base hip belt; you do not need Raven liters, a padded-belt menu, or V4 zips; or the $27.50–$49.50 gaps versus ECO/D matter.

Who should buy a Raven?

Buy a Raven if you need 35–50 L main-body options; you want Dyneema, printed EPLX200 with V4, or VX21; you want a 3″ padded belt with published sizes; or you want ECO’s included print versus Dirty’s $39 add-on. Then pick D, ECO, or X UL on material and ounces.

FAQ

What is the capacity of Dirty 30 ECO?

Hilltop lists 30 liters internal and 38 liters total in the intro, and Main Body 33 liters plus 1 L sides and 6 L / 4 L front in DETAILS. The name is not a verified single 30 L figure.

15–18 ounces depending on options.

Is Dirty 30 ECO frameless?

Yes. Current Ravens are also listed frameless.

Is Dirty 30 ECO waterproof?

No finished-pack waterproof rating. EPLX200 is the body fabric; mesh and roll-top are not a dry bag. Raven ECO documents a waterproof backing and taped horizontal seams—still not submersible.

What is Dirty 30 ECO made from?

EPLX200 Ecopak. Mesh, stretch, and hardware are separate. “Eco friendly Ecopak” is Hilltop’s phrase, not a Moon Picke sustainability claim.

Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven ECO: what is the difference?

Same named laminate family, different platforms: Dirty’s smaller/conflicting liter lines, 15–18 oz, $385, no base belt; Raven ECO’s 44–59 L recipe, from ~20 oz, $412.50, V4 options, padded-belt path, print included.

Is Raven larger than Dirty 30?

Yes on every comparable row: smallest Raven body 35 L versus Dirty 30 L or 33 L; Raven totals 44–59 L versus Dirty’s 38 L intro (or 41 L DETAILS open-mesh stack, editorial).

Which Hilltop Packs backpack is lighter?

Among these four, Dirty 30 ECO has the lightest listed range. Raven D is the lightest Raven start. Raven X UL is the heaviest listed Raven.

Dirty 30 or Raven: which is better for ultralight backpacking?

Neither is universal. Dirty 30 ECO vs Raven is a volume-and-options decision inside the same frameless shop. Match listed liters and belt needs to the kit you own.
