Best Hilltop Packs Food Bags & Bear Bags in 2026: Which One Should You Buy?

Compare current Hilltop Packs food and bear bags by size, weight, materials, hanging setup and price to find the right backpacking food-storage option.

By Moon PickePublished Oct 4, 2026Our review process

Hilltop Packs currently sells several lightweight food bags and hanging accessories. The right buy depends on capacity, closure, fabric, what is actually included, and the food-storage rules for your destination—not on picking the lightest listing. This guide to the best Hilltop Packs bear bags and food bags uses the live catalog. It is not a field test. See how we evaluate and our editorial standards.

A product named a bear bag is a bag you may use when hanging or organizing food. That name does not mean the bag is bear-resistant, bear-proof, IGBC-approved, or a substitute for a required canister. On multiple current pages Hilltop Packs states these bags are not bear proof or smell/odor proof.

How We Evaluated Hilltop Packs Food & Bear Bags

Moon Picke compared the live collection and each official product page: capacity, weight, material, closure, hanging design, included components, water wording, odor/bear statements, availability, and price. Fun Prints and Solid Color Series are D50T print/color variants—not extra awards. Moon Picke did not field-test these bags. “Trail-tested” is Hilltop copy. This page is how we chose the best Hilltop Packs bear bags and food-bag options from current specs.

Important: what “bear bag” does—and does not—mean

Keep these terms separate. A food bag organizes and carries food. A bear bag / bear-hang bag is slang for a bag used in a hanging system—a role, not a certified rating. Bear-resistant needs documented evidence for that exact product. Bear-proof is stronger still; Hilltop says these bags are not bear proof. A bear canister or approved device is what a land manager may require.

A bag that is out of reach when properly hung is not the same as fabric that resists a bear. Local rules override gear preference. Check the current food-storage rules for the park, forest, or wilderness area you plan to visit. This is not legal advice and not a claim that any Hilltop Packs bag is allowed everywhere.

KEY SPECS: Small 11×17″ 7–8 L / 1–3 days; Large 16×19″ 12–13 L / 3–7 days (Hilltop estimates). 1.3 oz / 1.6 oz; Spoon Stash +0.10 oz. Official interior/detail of the D50T roll-top food bag. Image: Hilltop Packs.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: Lowest listed D50T bag prices, the shared Small/Large geometry, a documented loop, and clear “kit not included” language. Moon Picke calculation: Large vs Small is +0.3 oz and +$6 for 7–8 L to 12–13 L.

WHAT TO KNOW: White D50T roll-top (not Fun Prints). SKU prefix 8818316247297. Seams taped; welded not listed.

SKIP IF: You need zipper access, 20 L, Dyneema’s listed weight, a custom print, or a required canister.

Best zipper access: Ultralight Zipper Food Bag (D50T Fabric Bear Bag)

CURRENT PRICE: Small $39; Large $46; Spoon Stash +$6. White only.

KEY SPECS: Same sizes/liters as the roll-top. 1.45 oz / 1.95 oz (+0.15 / +0.35 oz vs roll-top; Moon Picke calculation). Waterproof Challenge D50T fabric (Hilltop fabric wording). Waynesburg, PA.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: It is the D50T zipper alternative, not a different liter class. You pay more than the roll-top for zipper access and a small listed weight penalty.

SKIP IF: You need a hanging loop on the spec sheet, a print, or the lightest listed D50T weights.

Best listed-durable fabric: Food Bag – ECOPAK by Hilltop Packs

Food Bag – ECOPAK by Hilltop Packs

BEST FOR: ECOPAK™ EPLX200 in standard Small/Large volumes if you accept more listed weight than D50T.
CURRENT PRICE: Small $45 (Black, Gray, Brown, Yellow, White). Large Black $52; other Large colors currently listed at $45—confirm the live selector.

KEY SPECS: 7–8 L / 12–13 L; ~1–3 / ~3–7 days for 1 person (Hilltop). 2.1 oz / 3.1 oz. ECOPAK™ EPLX200. Listed snap; flat bottom; loop and hang kit not listed. Seam taped and laminated. Hilltop: NOT bear proof or odor proof. No current certification verified.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: Color choice and EPLX200, with an honest weight tradeoff. It is not the 20 L bag.

SKIP IF: Gram-counting is the priority, or you need 20 L.

Best higher capacity: 20 Liter Food Bag (Bear Bag) Our Biggest (ultralight ECOPAK)

Hilltop Packs 20 Liter Food Bag ECOPAK backpacking food bag
20 Liter Food Bag (Bear Bag) ECOPAK. Image: Hilltop Packs.

20 Liter Food Bag (Bear Bag) Our Biggest (ultralight ECOPAK)

BEST FOR: Long listed food carries or two-person volume when hanging is allowed and a canister is not required.
CURRENT PRICE: $54 (Gray, Black, Brown, Yellow Grid, White Grid).

KEY SPECS: 20 L; 16×25″ flat (Hilltop also prints “40×63g”—use 16×25″). 3.7 oz. Recycled ECOPAK, grid reinforced. Closure type not listed. Heavy-duty loop; no hang kit; flat bottom included. Seam taped (“virtually waterproof”). Not bear proof or smell proof. No current certification verified. Waynesburg, PA.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: The only 20 L food bag in the current collection. Moon Picke calculation using listed specs: $54 / 20 L = $2.70 per listed liter, versus D50T Small at $35 / 7.5 L midpoint ($4.67/L). A 20 L soft bag still does not replace a required canister. “Bear Bag” in the title is not IGBC approval.

SKIP IF: You only need 7–8 L or want the lightest listed Small bag.

Best listed lightest bag: Food Bag (ultralight DYNEEMA) Bear bag

Hilltop Packs Dyneema food bag; Semi-Clear was the in-stock color when checked

Food Bag (ultralight DYNEEMA) Bear bag

CURRENT PRICE: Small $52.95; Large $59.95; Spoon Stash +$6. Available October 4, 2026: Semi-Clear only (Gray, Blue, Green unavailable).

KEY SPECS: Same liters/days as D50T Small/Large. 1.2 oz / 1.30 oz. 1.43 oz Dyneema® (DCF). Closure and hanging loop not listed; flat bottom included; hang kit not included. Seam taped (“virtually waterproof”). Not bear proof or smell proof. No current certification verified. Waynesburg, PA.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: Documented gram floor. Moon Picke calculation: Small Dyneema is 0.1 oz lighter than D50T roll-top Small and $17.95 more. Official photos may show Gray beside Semi-Clear; only Semi-Clear was in stock.

SKIP IF: You want D50T printing, ECOPAK’s durability positioning, or a color other than Semi-Clear.

Best hanging hardware: Ultralight Bear Bag Throw Kit (Rock Sack + Cord System)

CURRENT PRICE: Kit 1 $21.25; Kit 2 $29.57; Brown / Kit 2 $39.57. Colors: Black, Light Gray, Brown, Yellow EPLX200, White.

KEY SPECS: Not a food bag and does not include one. Kit 1: sack, 1.8 mm 50′ cord, 2 micros ($21.25). Kit 2: sack, 2.2 mm 50′ cord, 2 micros, winder, large dogbone ($29.57). Component oz listed on the page; variant grams 62 / 85. Kit 2 dogbone is a PCT-method piece—not permission to hang everywhere. No current certification verified.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: The collection’s bundled hanging setup. Trees, legal hanging, and technique are on you. Moon Picke did not practice hangs with this kit.

SKIP IF: You already have line and sack, hanging is illegal or impractical, or a canister is required.

Best custom option: Custom Printed Food Bag (D50T Fabric Ultralight Bear Bag)

Custom Printed Food Bag (D50T Fabric). Image: Hilltop Packs.

Custom Printed Food Bag (D50T Fabric Ultralight Bear Bag)

BEST FOR: Same D50T Small/Large weights as the roll-top, with your artwork.
CURRENT PRICE: Small from $49.95; Large from $55.95; Add Flat Bottom $3; Spoon Stash $6.

KEY SPECS: Same D50T Small/Large sizes, liters, and 1.3 / 1.6 oz weights. Flat bottom optional (+$3). No hang kit listed. Not bear or critter proof (Hilltop). Seams taped. Lead time/custom returns: not listed. No current certification verified.

WHY IT STANDS OUT: Customization, not a new capacity class. Print premium versus white D50T roll-top: $49.95 vs $35 Small.

SKIP IF: You only need a plain white D50T bag, or you want stock Fun Prints graphics without uploading a file (separate listing, same print-tier prices).

Other current options

Fun Prints Vol #1 and D50T Solid Color Series share 1.3 / 1.6 oz D50T, the same liters, hanging loop, seam tape, and included flat bottom. Small typically $49.95. They are print/color variants, not new models. The same collection also lists Spoon Stash $6; ECOPAK rock throw bag $11–$12 (0.2 oz); mini carabiners; dogbone and flat PCT toggles; Notch ropes; cord winder; repair patches; custom-size dry bags; graphics service; gift cards. A custom-size dry bag is not automatically a food bag or an approved container.

How Hilltop Packs food bags differ

Three fabric families: Challenge D50T (lowest bag prices, printing, listed lighter than EPLX200 and 2.92 Dyneema), ECOPAK EPLX200 (heavier, durability/recycled positioning, 20 L option), and 1.43 oz Dyneema (DCF) (lightest listed bags, highest bag price, limited stock). Closures: documented roll-top, YKK zipper, and snap. Volume: Small, Large, 20 L. Hardware is separate except listed loops on some bags.

What Size Food Bag Do You Need?

Hilltop’s map is Small 7–8 L (1–3 days), Large 12–13 L (3–7 days), and 20 L (up to 7 days / long carries / two people in 20 L copy). Volume varies by calories, packaging, and whether trash and toiletries share the bag. Do not convert inches into guaranteed trail days.

Compact solo weekends often start at Small. Multi-day or shared food more often points at Large or 20 L on Hilltop’s framing. How a bag sits in a pack depends on the pack; see the published best Hilltop Packs backpacks guide for pack volumes, not food-storage law. Some areas also regulate trash, toiletries, and other scented items—read the current local rules.

Materials, weight, closures, and what’s included

Use Hilltop’s names: Challenge D50T, ECOPAK™ EPLX200, Dyneema® (DCF) 1.43 oz. Do not substitute Ultra, DTRS75, or X-Pac. Fabric is not finished-bag performance. Listed bag weights run from 1.2 oz to 3.7 oz. A Throw Kit (62 g or 85 g variant grams) can outweigh the bag. Spoon Stash is +0.10 oz / +$6.

Roll-top: no zipper. YKK zipper: weather-resistant zipper language. Snap: listed on ECOPAK Small/Large. 20 L and Dyneema closures: not listed in those words. A hang usually needs cord, a rock sack, and often a carabiner or toggle. PCT hanging is not permitted, possible, or required everywhere and needs suitable trees.

Stock D50T roll-top, Fun Prints, Solid Color, and 20 L include the features each page lists. Throw line, throw bag, and carabiners are sold separately where the pages say so. The Throw Kit is sack + cord + hardware—no food bag. Do not assume a photo of cord means the SKU includes cord.

Water, odor, hang systems, and canisters

Keep separate: waterproof fabric, a water-resistant zipper, seam-taped construction, and a waterproof finished bag. Hilltop often says seam taped and “virtually waterproof.” No hydrostatic rating for the finished bag was listed. A food bag is not automatically a dry bag with a documented rating. Hilltop states these bags are not smell proof / odor proof.

A complete hang—where hanging is legal and practical—may need cord, a throw sack, hardware, skill, and a tree. A soft Hilltop food bag is not interchangeable with a required bear canister. If the destination requires an approved canister or specified device, follow that requirement. Do not use a Hilltop Packs soft bag as a workaround. Requirements vary by park, forest, wilderness, campground, and season. Check the current food-storage rules for the exact area. This article does not claim any product is legal in every U.S. national park.

How to choose

  1. Where are you going? Name the park, forest, or wilderness.
  2. What rules apply? If a canister or locker is required, do not use a soft bag as the overnight solution.
  3. Bag or hanging system? Organization only, or also cord and a rock sack?
  4. Capacity: Small 7–8 L, Large 12–13 L, 20 L.
  5. Weight, fabric, components, budget: D50T roll-top from $35; zipper from $39; ECOPAK from $45; 20 L $54; Dyneema from $52.95; print from $49.95; Kit 1 from $21.25.

Decision tree (practical, not legal advice)

Required approved canister? Yes → follow that first. No → hanging allowed and practical? Yes → pick liters and add a Throw Kit if you lack cord/sack. No → use the method those rules allow. Then choose fabric, closure, and budget on the current collection.

FAQ

What is a Hilltop Packs bear bag?

A soft food-storage bag or hanging accessory labeled for bear-hang use. That is a packing role, not a verified bear-resistant container.

Are Hilltop Packs bear bags bear-proof?

Hilltop Packs says no. Moon Picke found no authoritative evidence to call any of these soft bags bear-proof.

Do these bags have verified IGBC approval?

No. Do not treat the words “bear bag” as certification.

Can a Hilltop Packs bear bag replace a bear canister?

Not where a canister or other approved device is required. Follow the current local rules.

What size Hilltop Packs food bag should I buy?

Hilltop Small 7–8 L, Large 12–13 L, 20 L—then adjust for bulky food. Day figures are manufacturer estimates.

How much do Hilltop Packs food bags weigh?

Listed bags run from 1.2 oz (Dyneema Small) to 3.7 oz (20 L ECOPAK). D50T roll-top is 1.3 / 1.6 oz. Hang-kit weight is extra.

Are Hilltop Packs food bags waterproof?

Hilltop documents waterproof or laminated fabrics and seam tape, often “virtually waterproof.” That is not a tested waterproof finished bag. The zipper model’s zipper is weather resistant.

Do Hilltop Packs bear bags come with hanging cord?

Pages that address it say throw line, throw bag, and carabiners are sold separately. The Throw Kit bundles hardware and does not include the food bag.

What is the difference between a food bag and a bear bag here?

Hilltop uses both names on the same kinds of soft bags. Neither name adds odor-proofing or IGBC status.

Which Hilltop Packs food bag is best for backpacking?

For most catalog shoppers, the Ultralight Roll Top Food Bag (D50T). Choose zipper, ECOPAK, 20 L, Dyneema, custom, or a Throw Kit when those documented needs dominate—after local rules are satisfied.

Final verdict

Among current Hilltop Packs food bags and bear bags, buy the D50T roll-top as the default in-stock bag; zipper D50T for YKK access; ECOPAK Small/Large for EPLX200 and colors; 20 L ECOPAK for listed volume; Dyneema Semi-Clear for listed minimum weight; custom or Fun Prints for graphics; and the Throw Kit if you still need hang hardware. None of these is a certified bear-resistant canister. Check the current food-storage rules for where you are going, then match capacity, fabric, closure, and what is actually in the box.
